What is Metal Bending?

Metal Bending RAPMAF

The Foundation of Metal Fabrication

Metal bending is a forming process that plastically deforms a sheet of metal to create a desired angle or shape without cutting material. Using a machine called a press brake, a punch and die are used to apply force, producing everything from simple brackets to complex, multi-bend enclosures with exceptional repeatability.

Bending typically refers to creating straight-line bends (like V-bends), while forming can involve more complex, non-linear shapes created with stamping dies. We specialize in both, but this service focuses on precision bending.

Springback is the tendency of metal to return to its original shape after bending. Our skilled operators and modern CNC machines anticipate this effect by slightly over-bending the material, ensuring the final angle is precise.

This is the shortest possible leg that can be formed next to a bend. As a general rule, it should be at least four times the material’s thickness to prevent distortion and ensure a quality bend.

Yes, it is possible, but it carries a risk of the coating cracking or flaking at the bend line. For best results, we strongly recommend applying finishes like powder coating after the bending process is complete.

Bend deduction is a value subtracted from the flat pattern to account for the material stretching during bending. You don’t need to calculate it; simply provide a 3D model, and our software will create the perfect flat pattern.

A hem is a type of bend where the edge of the sheet is folded back over itself. This is done to create a safe, smooth edge and to increase the stiffness of the part.

We prevent cracking by ensuring the inside bend radius is appropriate for the material type and thickness. Forcing too tight of a radius is the most common cause of cracking, which our DFM analysis helps to avoid.

Yes, it’s highly important. Bending “with the grain” can cause cracking, especially in certain materials. We always orient parts on the sheet to ensure bends are made “across the grain” for maximum strength.

Air bending is the most common method where the punch presses the workpiece into the V-die, but it doesn’t bottom out. The final angle is determined by how far the punch descends, offering great flexibility with minimal tooling.

For the most accurate quote, please provide a 3D CAD model (like STEP), a 2D drawing (PDF/DXF) indicating critical dimensions, the material type, desired quantity, and any required finishes.

Our standard tolerance for angles is ±0.5 degrees and for linear dimensions is ±0.010 inches. We can often achieve even tighter tolerances upon request, which should be specified in your drawing.

Yes, we have a range of press brakes to handle various thicknesses. Our capabilities table (Module 5) provides general guidelines, but feel free to contact us with your specific requirements.

We can provide detailed FAI reports for your project to verify that the initial parts meet all of your specifications before proceeding with a full production run.

Typical lead times for standard projects range from 5 to 10 business days. This can vary based on part complexity, quantity, and material availability, but we always provide a firm delivery date with your quote.
